I have tried so many Linux OS’s and didn’t care for any of them for a whole lot of reasons.
Recently I came across Jolicloud and this Linux OS is beautiful. Everything installed alongside my Windows 7 64bit OS without any problems or need for drivers!! and I have the option of booting into Joli or windows.
JoliOS is so good that I am going to dump windows permanently!
I already installed JoliOS on my netbook, happily dumped windows off it!
And I am going to dump windows 7 off my main computer this weekend!
Jolicloud can be run as a cloud based OS but you can download and install apps and programs on your harddrive if you want. WINE works flawlessly and I am able to use every one of the windows programs right in Joli without any problems!
I can’t say enough good things about Jolicloud!

you should’ve tried linux mint too, which is based on ubuntu, but better suited for people moving from windows to linux.

Two weeks ago the big gorilla in the room from Microsoft. Tells me for the second time (after buying a new key the first time) my windows 7 is not genuine, So I need to pay them more money to keep windows going. This was the straw that broke the camels back with Microsoft.I backed up what I needed and went kamikaze with a complete format of the hard drive.
It took me about a week to research all the flavors of Linux out there. I choose Ubuntu because of the programs that comes with it and ease of installation. Instead of downloading the software I ordered it online to come in the mail on C.D. As far as I am concerned, Ubuntu is rock solid number one on the list, I did not know anything about linux until two weeks ago. I love it!!! Should have stuffed the gorilla long time ago!

Ubuntu 11.04 (I use ubuntu alternate install cd)

Then you have unity and gnome.

Then install KDE and xfce

Then you have the choice of 4 different desktop managers:

Unity, gnome, kde or xfce (all programs to be used interchangeably)

Then use xfce as the default - then you have a very fast desktop without any fancy 3d -or themes or complicated setups.

In windows and Mac you only have one desktop manager, but in above you can choose which one you like best
